Amy's Lunchbox Cafe, You Had Me at Oil-less

Lately, it seems like the things I love had the word "less" in it-- oil-less, sugarless, Guileless (ehem ehem). Kidding aside, it was my friend Jewel who first discovered Amy's Lunchbox Cafe, a newly opened restaurant in Cebu City that offered oil-less and healthy dishes. After learning this, we couldn't wait to visit the establishment so we could try out the different dishes that they offered.

When we first visited, we were informed that they were on soft opening. Considering they just opened on the last week of January, there wasn't much information about the cafe. Apart from their Facebook page, we didn't know any other information about Amy's Lunchbox Cafe so we decided to visit it.

On our visit, they were offering 30% discount on all of their ala carte items. They decided to extend this promo until February 28, 2015 so if you still want to take advantage of the discount, you can visit this week.

At the restaurant, we learned that Amy's Lunchbox Cafe had the same owners as Manila Foodshoppe. But according to the manager, the owner of the restaurant decided to put up a different restaurant where they could cater to those who wanted to eat healthier dishes. Thus, the owner decided to invest in expensive cookware that eradicated the need to use cooking oil when preparing meals. Instead of using oil, the dishes prepared at Amy's Lunchbox Cafe made use of the ingredients' natural oils; resulting to lesser oily dishes and healthier tastes.

The interior was very clean looking and simple. It wasn't distracting to the eye and overly decorated. The cafe offers a private room where diners can hold special events or meetings inside.

We decided to try their Steamed Lapu-Lapu, which was good for two. I found the prices of their dishes to be a bit pricey for regular lunch or dinner so it really wasn't recommended (unless you had money to spare). They offered some regular serving dishes complete with rice and Iced Tea but these were suitable for just one person's consumption. For a few extra pesos, you could opt for the dishes that can be shared by 2-3 people.

Our Steamed Lapu-Lapu order arrived and it tasted well. It didn't have an oily taste to it and it felt fresh. Since we weren't really hungry, we decided to share this and have just one cup of rice. After the meal, I wanted to try their cake but the waitress didn't know how much they costed. Maybe on our next visit, instead.

Some of their bestsellers were their Pineapple Glazed Roasted Ribs and their Sardines and Orange Salad with Basil Pesto. When I checked out their Facebook page, I learned that their Beef Stew Cottage Pie and Chicken Pot Pie were also some of the favorites of their loyal customers. We decided to try these on our next visit.

Finally, there's a restaurant in Cebu that patronizes being healthy. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Amy's Lunchbox Cafe is situated behind Harold's Hotel in Gorordo Ave., Cebu City.  You may give them a call at (032)236-6216.
